Leave

With leave requests please provide a couple of sentences on what work/projects may be impacted. How you have addressed this, whom to contact if someone needs assistance, etc. Basically, think about those it may impact and how you have them covered. This could be as simple as “Project X is on schedule and my leave during this timeperiod was accounted for when establishing the project timeline” or “I am providng a draft report prior to my departure and will address edits upon my return, the final product is due…”, etc.

If you want to work from home you should:

• let me know,
• briefly detail what you are working on,
• state whether it could have any impacts on other’s ability to be in contact with you, or finishing products/data accessibility etc.

If you are going to be working from home for more than 1 day in a week then:

• justify a bit more than a, b, and c.

Travel

Travel requests should use a standard format such as the one below. Anytime there are multiple travelers work to have a group travel requests.

Conferences

If you are not presenting it is unlikely that we can get approval for your attendance.

• Justify why you should attend
  • How does attending facilitate you doing your job
  • What does the state get in return
  • What do you get out of it
• How will you disseminate what you have learned?

Things not to state

• It will help me improve my coding
• This is a topic I’m interested in
• The conference location looks like fun

Conference attendance requests should come with a link to the meeting, a brief statement of why the meeting is of value, what will be presented, how any findings will be disseminated (1 paragraph). Make it easy for me to justify the request to the director.

Post-conference

I need a brief followup on how the conference went, if you gave a talk/poster how was it received? Any persons in attendance that I can follow up with to get input on your work?

Workshops/Classes

Workshops and classes may need more justification than conferences depending on the duration and costs of the course. The same request for justification of conference attendance applies here. However, there should be a greater emphasis on how this benefits the state. A description of how you will disseminate your training to the rest of the biometrics group and/or biologists is also necessary.
